Mantic's Brock Riders unboxing/review

The brock riders are a completely new unit in the Kings of war universe, they are the only kind of cavalry available to dwarves and they are a completely new concept if you came from the warhammer background.
For general considerations about the material check the Ogre unboxing here, below you can find more details specific to the brock riders

  • I'm reviewing the content of the box sent to the kickstarter backers, I'm not sure if the contents of the final package sold by retailers will change.
  • There is no command sprue elements in this kit, I'm not sure if Mantic will ever release a metal add on with the command group bits (like they did for Ogres and Fleabag Riders)
  • The brock riders are not yet available from the mantic store so if you want them you have to wait for the general release
  • They come with a 25 x 50 mm base, for reference check the base image on the Ogre unboxing

There are 2 types of brock body and there are 5 pieces of each type in the kit.
The body comes in two parts and there are some extra plates that need to be glued to the main body.
This is the second body type, also for this one some plates needs to be glued on the main body. The two body halves sometimes does not fit perfectly so you might want to use a little bit of modelling putty to close the gaps
There are 3 types of heads and there are 4 of each of them in the kit, it means 12 heads available for 10 models, so you will have some left overs.

Unfortunately there is just one body type, in the picture tou can see it from the front and the back.
On the top you can see some ornaments for the front of the saddle, 2 types and 5 of each.

Below the capes withe the wolf (?) head that need to be glued on the topo, also for them you have 5 of each types.
Two weapons available, again also for this one 5 of each.
And if you were already thinking about this... This is a test I did using the brock riders plus an Avatars of War Berserker. It does looks cool!

Mantic's Fleabag Riders unboxing/review

The Fleabag riders are Mantic Games' take on the classic Goblin Wolfriders, if you followed fleabag's riders design evolution you already noticed that the actual miniatures looks different from the original concept. Mantic redesigned the model in order to re-use their existing Mawbeast (a nasty predator that is basically their version of the beloved GW Squig).
For general considerations about packing and material you can check the Ogre review I did before, for details about the Fleabag riders keep reading!
  • Assemble the models will take time, I put together 10 of them in about an hour. There are lots of small pieces (like the Mawbeasts tongues...) and some of the small pieces have some nasty molding lines that takes time to be cleared. I haven't said that before but plastic glue will not work on this, you have to use super glue. Mine had also some gaps between the goblin body and the mawbeast ride, so I had to use some green stuff to close the gaps.
  • If you are thinking about converting the fleabag riders into a mawbeast unit I have some bad news for you, It is possible but it will take some time and skill. The mawbeast ride has half of the goblin rider legs attached to its back, if you want to get rid of the rider you have to cut off this part. After that you will have to use some green stuff to sculp the fur on the mawbeast back.
  • Speaking about convertions you could use some of the leftovers of this kit (about 5 heads and 5 spears in my case) to convert Mantic's plastic Goblin archers into Goblin spearmen (or speargoblin?!).
  • There is no command group bits in the package I received, I'm not sure if Mantic will sell them separately (like they did for the Ogres) or it will be available in the retail box. Anyway the command group bits are made in Metal and not in plastic, you could use it to make some characters (Wiz, Biggit and Flaggit) on fleabag's back for example.
  • Mantic has another version of the kit with goblin archers, in that case the goblin archers are made of metal and they are basically and add on to this kit (just the rider changes, the rest of the model it's the same.
Mawbeast body A

There are two mawbeast's body alternatives, each is composed by two halves (one has the goblin rider legs attached unfortunately) and the other half of the goblin legs are on a different sprue.
There are 5 mawbeasts body like this in the kit.
Mawbeast body B

This is the second mawbeast body alternative, it has an extra component (the mawbeast paw).
There are 5 mawbeasts body like this in the kit.
Rider's Body This is the upper body of the goblin riders available in two variants (there are 5 of each in the kit). The shield goes in the slot in the right (green arrow) and the head goes on the top (red arrow). There is a peg on the bottom that goes into the ride.

Goblin's heads
Three heads types are available in the kit, and there are 5 of each (it means you have 5 extra heads). The one on the left has also a decoration on the top pictured just below in this image.
The quality of them is better than the goblin heads available in the infantry sprues, there is much more details.

Spears
The kit has three different spears designs and there are 5 of each types. (it meas you will have 5 extra spears left). As a note some of them were badly bended so I had to warm them up with hot water (almost boiling) in order to restore their shape.

Mantic's Ogres unboxing/review

I just got my Kickstarter shipment from Mantic's games and i'm getting ready to build some Ogres, before doing that I shot some pictures in order to give an idea about the content of the Ogre kits.

Let's start with some general info:
  • The Ogres (and other brand new minis from Mantic) are casted in hard injected platic that looks a lot like Privateer press plastic.
  • No sprue here, just some pieces already cut and sold in a plastic bag (I've no idea about what the retailer package will look like), my guess is that the factory the cast them does also the packing. There were a couple of missing parts (I got two Ogre shooter units and in both of them there was one less crossbow and one more shotgun...Mantic already confirmed that they will send me the missing parts) but I think's that normal since they started mass producing this stuff recently so they need a little tweaking in the quality process
  • The cast is not bad, there are few mold lines and they are easy to clean. I found some miscast that I was able to fix with boiling water but nothing that demanded a replacement.
Here are some pictures:

Scale vs Gw Ogre Base details
Ogre Hero

This is a subset of the components of the close combat Ogres, the only new thing is the left arm. (In the picture you can see the miscasted leg.)

Ogre troops

This kit allows to build three Ogres with shield and one handed weapon or three Ogres with two handed weapon. There are three different bodies, 5 different heads, three arms with shields (identical), 2 arms with one handed blade (identical), 1 arm with one handed axe, 2 arms with two handed blades (identical) and 1 arm with two handed axe

Ogre Shooter

This kit allows to build three Ogres with crossbow or three Ogres with bluderbuss. The bodies and the heads are the same of the close combat unit above, then there are three arms with crossbow (identical, in the picture there are just two crossbow since one was missing from the bag) and three arms with bluderbuss (identical).

Updates: a couple of extra pictures
